A Christian Way of Dressing

Calvary greetings in Jesus’ name.

Writing an article on the mode of Christian dressing has become an urgent matter, largely due to the excessive recklessness in how believers present themselves today, both within and outside the church. Our approach to dressing has significantly deviated from the divine instructions given by God Almighty, our Lord and Savior, the Owner of our souls. This article reflects on the scriptural foundation found in Exodus 28:2: "And make sacred garments for your brother Aaron to give him dignity and honor."

The Importance of Dressing in Christian Life

Discussions about dressing have always been a focal point within the faith community. While modern fashion trends continue to evolve, it is essential to evaluate how our clothing choices align with biblical principles. Exodus 28:2, though primarily concerning the priestly garments of Aaron, offers timeless lessons on the significance of our outward appearance as a reflection of our inward faith.

Understanding Exodus 28:2

In Exodus 28:2, God instructed Moses to create garments for Aaron, the high priest. These garments were crafted with the finest materials and intricate designs to reflect the dignity and honor of his priestly office. Although this context specifically addresses the priesthood, the underlying principles hold relevance for all Christians. Our outward appearance should glorify God and reflect the sacred dignity of being His children.

Key Themes and Principles

Dignity and Honor

The garments for Aaron were designed to bestow dignity and honor. Similarly, the way we dress should reflect respect for ourselves and others. As Christians, our clothing should communicate the dignity we possess as children of God.

Modesty

God consistently emphasizes modesty in His instructions. In 1st Timothy 2:9-10 (NIV), the Bible states:

"I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God."

Although addressed to women, this principle applies to all believers. Our dressing should reflect humility and respect for our bodies, which are temples of the Holy Spirit.

Reflecting Inner Faith

A Christian's outward appearance should mirror their inner faith and devotion to God. As Colossians 3:12 (NIV) urges believers:

"Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience."

While this verse metaphorically emphasizes virtues, it reminds us that external choices, including clothing, should align with Christian values.

Cultural Sensitivity

Christians are called to be mindful of the cultural contexts in which they live and to avoid causing unnecessary offense. The Apostle Paul exemplified this approach in 1st Corinthians 9:22 (NIV):

"To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some."

This includes dressing in a manner that respects cultural norms while maintaining personal integrity and faith.

Practical Applications for Christian Dressing

Choose Modest and Respectful Clothing

Select clothing that adequately covers and is not overly revealing. This applies to both men and women, reflecting respect for oneself and others.

Dress for the Occasion

Consider the appropriateness of your attire for different settings, such as church, work, or social gatherings. Dressing thoughtfully demonstrates respect for the occasion and those around you.

Reflect Your Values

To opt for clothing that aligns with your Christian values. Avoid attire with offensive imagery or language. Instead, choose garments that reflect virtues like compassion, kindness, and humility—clothing that draws others toward the kingdom of God rather than causing confusion or distraction.

Be Mindful of Cultural Norms

Respect the cultural norms of your community. While staying true to your faith, dress in a way that avoids unnecessary offense and promotes understanding.

Emphasize Inner Beauty

While outward appearance is important, prioritize the development of inner beauty and character. Modern society often places undue emphasis on external appearances, sometimes turning them into status symbols. This attitude contradicts 1st Peter 3:3-4 (NIV), which says:

"Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight."

Conclusion

The way Christians dress should reflect the dignity, honor, and values of our faith in God. By drawing lessons from Exodus 28:2 and other biblical principles, we can make thoughtful clothing choices that honor God, respect others, and reflect our inner faith.

As we navigate the ever-changing landscape of fashion, let us remember that true beauty and worth come from a heart devoted to God and a life lived according to His teachings.
